Show and Tell

Friday afternoon I came home to find this little critter crawling up the side of my house. So I did what ever good father should. Caught the thing stuck it in a five gallon bucket until I could round up a large jar. Then I sent it off with the kiddos for their show and tell.

For those of you who might not know this is a Texas Brown Tarantula. Long about this time of year they start migrating and are a fairly common sight if you live out in the boonies like me. Contrary to the myths they are fairly harmless, no worse than a bee sting unless you are allergic or something. They do not normally crawl up houses and such but we have had a lot of rain lately and I guess this one was sick of having wet feet. I hate when my feet get wet and I only have two.

You call that a little creature? Is that what the spiders look like in Texas?

That's one big ass spider and I want no part of it! Bee stings don't exactly feel good ;)

Argh, I hate spiders. It seems to be "spiders come inside the house now" season in England and this week I've caught 3 big fellas of what they call 'house spiders' here... thick long legs and all, about 3 inches big. There are smaller spindly ones that have come in and like to set up house in the upper corners of certain rooms, I don't mind them because they don't leave their spots... but I hate the roamers!

I forgot to say, they're aggressive too... little bastards will come right at you when you're trying to catch them.

I also had to dispatch a spider last week trying to make a web on my front door... it was kind of a small thing but it looked like its abdomen was a huge peanut m&m, so disgusting.

When I was in elementary school, I was so fascinated by tarantulas. One of my neighbors told me that you could find them in wood piles. That year I begged my parents to have a fireplace built into our house so we could have a woodpile. It was a no go for my parents.
